This reading comprehension strategies unit is designed to teach students retelling, story elements, characters, and main idea. The lessons use real literature, and you can select books from a list of many different suggestions.
Through minilessons that gradually release responsibility, your students will learn to:

- Retell the beginning, middle, and end of a story
- Describe the the traits of a story's characters
- Identify the main idea or lesson of a story
- Identify the reasons an author gives to support a point in the text
- Tell the main topic of a nonfiction text
- Retell the most important details from a nonfiction text
